Stem Cell Injections For Knee Injuries

Over the decades, orthopedic surgeons have treated cartilage injuries and arthritis of the knee with surgical procedures if patients fail conservative treatment. Would you fathom that , in fact, we may be moving towards simple injections of stem cells derived form a patient’s own body to repair cartilage, reverse and heal arthritic changes?

Indeed this may not only be true nu Dr. Bennett has extensive experience and followed patients that he has treated in this fashion. While he has noted a failure rate of 7 percent and also quickly adds that symptomatic relief doesn’t necessarily mean that he has returned an arthritic joint to normal with stem cell injections, his results are provocatively positive.

In fact basic science studies support his clinical findings.

These researchers Evaluated active mobilization effect of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into injured tissues after intraarticular injection ofMSCs, and evaluated their contribution to tissue regeneration. Their study demonstrated the possibility of intraarticular injection of MSCs for the treatment of intraarticular tissue injuries including ACL, meniscus, or cartilage.

Dr. Bennett has often utilized adult bone marrow derived stem cells in conjunction with cartilage surgery to affect cartilage healing at the time of surgery. One surgical approach has converted a procedure that grows cartilage cells-typically a 2-stage procedure into a single surgery.

More exciting are the results that he is seeing with injecting arthritic joints with adult stem cells. The procedure requires 10 minutes of anesthesia to harvest the cells from the pelvis. Following they are injected directly into the affected joint.

We all have adult stem cells in our body. Interestingly, these cells are found in virtually ever tissue in our body, to include; muscle, cartilage, tendon, ligament, heart , and yes, even brain tissue. These cells are cells that “haven’t decided what they want to be when they grow-up”, meaning they can turn into various types of tissue when certain, signals, nourishment and environmental conditions are present. The same cell can become bone or cartilage.
It was thought that Osteoarthritis could be a function of the aging process with a depletion of adult stem cells in the joint. Stem cells are found in the cartilage, synovium and bone in the joint. It may be that as we age, these cells don’t respond in a fashion like they should, rather than, having too few.

Nobutake Ozeki, Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Japan, injected synovial stem cells into rats with osteoarthritis. Ozeki’s research was recently presented at the Orthopaedic Research Society’s (ORS) 2013 Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. They found that these cells could delay cartilage breakdown.

So too have other researchers noted that when stem cells are injected into a knee with cartilage damage, the cells migrate to the injured area. This is true not only for knee joints but is seen with other damaged tissue like hearts that have had a heart attack or Myocardial Infarction.

Dr. Bennett, has been utilizing stem cells in this fashion to treat various tendon, cartilage, ligament, arthritic injuries and non-unions of bone for years with clinical success that is exemplified by this basic science research.

Yes, it is true!…….One day a simple injection of stem cells with a carrier substance may be able to completely undo, the sequelae of long-standing arthritis and potentially begin to undo the changes associated with the subchondral bone.

For now, at Bennett Orthopedics and Sportsmedicine, we offer adult bone marrow derived stem cell treatment both as point-of-service injections and as adjuncts to surgical procedures.

At Bennett Orthopedics and Sportsmedicine, adult bone marrow derived tem cells have been being utilized to treat cartilage injuries, osteoarthritis and knee tendon injuries. Dr. Bennett has performed stem injections with exciting symptomatic relief. Additionally, he has incorporated stem cells into surgical porcedures for injuries that involved unhealthy tissue.

A body builder disrupted his quadriceps tendon and he incorporated into the surgical repair stem cells and PRP. See video below showing his amazing recovery.
