Bone Marrow Stem Cells Gold Standard

Many times, we get patients who call the office who want to get stem cell procedures done, but they aren’t sure why different clinics use different types of cells. The type and location of the cell you are using makes a huge difference in the outcome and success of the treatment.

For starters, in the orthopedic setting, the gold standard of treatment involves using stem cells from bone marrow, not adipose and not from umbilical cords or amniotic fluid. In fact, companies that try selling amniotic stem cells, don’t even have live cells in their product. It’s also important to know what products are FDA approved. Procedures that involve culturing and growing adipose cells are not FDA approved.

There is some research studies that try to speed recovery time by boosting mesenchymal stem cells to over express basic fibroblast growth factor[1]. There is no need to add any medications or growth factors to the bone marrow concentrate with its Mesenchymal stem cells to get them to do their job. This approach has been utilized at Bennett Orthopedics for rotator cuff surgery and knee surgery, as well as hip surgery. Dr. Bennett has been successful in treating nonunion fractures with concentrated stem cells in the clavicle, elbow and scapula.

Even researchers have a difficult time knowing exactly what type of cells they are using in their experiments. In a Letter to the Editor in the Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery Journal,  a study that said they used mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to treat microfractures when in fact, in actuality used they were adipose derived stem cells[2].

Dr. Bennett has been using biologics to treat a myriad of injuries for over ten years. He uses a combination of platelet rich plasma (PRP) with the bone marrow stem cell concentrate that helps work with the heparin that is used to keep the stem cells from sticking to each other. The procedure is done either in the office or in conjunction with surgery in the hospital setting.
