When To Consider Knee Replacement Surgery

knee replacementKnee replacement surgery is something that you will have to discuss with your orthopedic surgeon. However, if you have begun to experience knee pain that is so bad that it interferes with the things that you need or want to do, then it may be time to consider it.

This surgery is an option when a number of nonsurgical interventions, including using walking aids, physical therapy and medication have not been effective for alleviating the pain you are experiencing. Some of the other signs that may indicate you need this surgery is if you have joint aching, then some relief; using your knee extensively and then experiencing pain; no mobility in the knee; stiffness in the joint after resting or inactivity; or pain that tends to increase somewhat in humid climates.

If you are experiencing these issues, then your general care physician may provide you with a referral to see an orthopedic surgeon who will help you figure out if you need knee surgery and the type that is right for your specific problems. In some cases, they may decide that this type of surgery is not right. This will typically occur if you have any type of infection, there is not enough bone present or if there is not enough strength in the bone to place an artificial knee.

In most cases, your doctor will probably work to delay this surgery for as long as they possibly can and use less invasive procedures. However, if you are experiencing symptoms of serious joint disease, then the knee replacement procedure may provide you with the chance to experience less pain and be able to get back to your normal, day to day activities. The key here is to discuss your options with your doctor to ensure you find the right one for you.
